This is a short cell animation i did for experimentation into using different medias for my final animation. I like it i think it looks fairly smooth, it was made up of 56 cells so its only about 5 seconds long. I used standard A4 cartridge paper and just traced through it with a thick black pen. It has a sort of surreal theme which i enjoy its one of my favourite types of sketching.

After Effects puppet pin tool

I've tried using the puppet pin tool here, i think its a good idea and easy to use but i didn't use it with seperate layers so the limbs look a little bit bendy when ive played it back.

I sketched out this character and cut it out in photoshop ready to take into after effects.

I want to try this again and see if i can make it better and longer and maybes add in some audio?

Doritos Stop motion

This is a recent advert for Doritos which is made by stopmotion. It fits perfectly with its audio track and all of th crisps and movements flow with the beat. I've notcied that they repeat the sequence though.

After this scene in the clip the whole thing is just put into rewind and repeated backwards, except speeded up a bit.

Motomichi Nakamura

This animation artist has been all over the world creating and animating. his works consists usually of black, white and red which includes bizarre characters in all sorts of different situations.

I really enjoy his work a lot, its amazing how simple shaes and a few colours can make such an interesting and abstract animation. I would very much like to experiment with this type of media.

Frames

We have learnt about frames per second (FPS), the more frames in a second, the smoother the animation. In England 12 or 25 frames per second is average but in America it is 35.

The animated programme Pokemon is 12 FPS -

Whereas a different animation e.g the pixar lamp animation is 25 FPS -

Since i've been using after effects i can tell approx 5 - 7 seconds into this clip the animators have used motion blur which lets your animations look like they're moving fast and you don't need as many frames either.

Zoopraxiscope

A Zoopraxiscope is a device to view a sequence of images at once which forms an animation. It was invented by Eadweard Muybridge (invented 1879) an English photographer.

This is one of the first he invented, it looks very similar stop motion i think. It would be a good idea to do something inspired by this to get an old fashioned effect on the screen. It would fit in with my audio track which is Goldberg variations which is also very old.

A Trip to the Moon ( Le Voyage dans la lune)

This image was very famous in the early cinema era. The character was also used in a recent series called  The Mighty Boosh.

                      Georges Melies

This is the work of Geroges Melies, he was one of the top pioneers of early cinema. This is one of his longest and most famous stop motion films.
I enjoyed the movie i think because it old fashioned and really shows how stop motion can be used. I like the black and white filming because it lets the whole screen run a bit smoother because it doesnt pick up every little detail. I think i would like to incorporate black and white/grey into my animation.

This is the first ever stop motion film made, it was called 'Matches: An Appeal' which was created in 1899 by Arthur Melbourne Cooper.

A/E Tutorial 1

This was the first tutorial we had in after affects. We learnt the basics of moving images and all icons unfer 'transform' eg rotation/opacity/position. Also putting a track behind the images.
